ECOS Statement on U.S. EPA’s Proposed National Primary Drinking Water Regulation
Washington, DC – State and territorial environmental agencies are the lead regulators for water, land, and air in almost all the states and appreciate the need for U.S. EPA to advance science-based standards to protect our precious drinking water supplies from toxic chemicals. EPA has taken an important step forward under the Safe Drinking Water Act proposing first-ever enforceable limits for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). States look forward to EPA providing detail and assistance regarding the proposed Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) and other aspects of its comprehensive roadmap affecting water, land, materials, waste cleanup, and air quality. States are committed to working in partnership with EPA and other federal agencies to prevent pollution, promote equity, and achieve enforceable standards. Congress will need to provide significantly more funding for state capacity building and infrastructure to implement and enforce PFAS-related regulations that can protect and sustain our communities.
