Last weekend, the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) posted a Science Saturday video on ocean research using underwater gliders. Science Saturday is a free monthly science education program run by DPNR for over eight years.
Originally an in-person program to connect parents and children with science related to DPNR’s work, the program went virtual during the pandemic. Since then, DPNR staff have hosted monthly sessions on Facebook and YouTube, meeting with experts around the territory to discuss topics ranging from marine debris to sedimentation to mangroves. The monthly series connects the community with environmental science education and has become popular enough to be covered in St. Thomas’ online newspaper.
