The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is looking ahead to Halloween by sharing sustainable hacks to help ‘squash’ food waste and keep pumpkins out of the landfill. Instead of discarding pumpkins at the end of October, Texans are urged to find creative ways to use them, from the kitchen to the garden.
Fresh pumpkins can be turned into puree for soups, pies, and more, and pumpkin seeds can be roasted for a healthy snack or planted to grow next year’s pumpkins. Carved pumpkins can be composted or even repurposed as birdfeeders.
