The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality this week marked 25 years of the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program during its annual conference at the University of Texas. The program, which places interns at TCEQ, other state agencies, and private companies, began in 1992 with 35 interns and now boasts 115.
Since its inception, TCEQ has benefited from the talents of almost 2,000 interns who have participated and considers interns part of its potential job-hiring pool. Currently, 45 former interns are on the agency’s payroll, including Ramiro Garcia Jr., Deputy Director of the Office of Enforcement and Compliance; Jaime Garza, Regional Director for the Laredo and Harlingen offices; and Lori Wilson, Executive Assistant to the agency’s Executive Director.
