This week, the GreenNY Council released the Greening New York State report, its thirteenth annual progress update on green procurement and sustainability. Covering FY2023-24, the report details actions that state agencies are taking to reduce energy use, promote energy efficiency, decrease waste generation, expand the purchasing of green products and services, and advance related initiatives.
In this year’s progress report, GreenNY highlighted several successes, including:
- 1.5 trillion BTUs of energy savings at state facilities through efficiency projects,
- 50% reduction in waste produced compared to FY 2022–23,
- 89% overall recycling rate, including construction and demolition waste,
- 16.9 tons of material composted, and
- 67,818 trees planted.
The GreenNY Council, co-chaired by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and other state agencies, is responsible for implementing Governor Hochul’s Executive Order (EO) 22. The EO set new standards and environmental performance requirements for state government agencies and other affected entities. The Council is charged with leveraging resources, creating guidance, streamlining sustainability reporting, and helping New York achieve its climate and sustainability goals.
