On November 4, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) released its annual 2025 Employee Engagement Survey Report, which measures staff opinions on the department’s work culture and helps NMED identify areas for improvement. The voluntary, anonymous survey achieved an 85% response rate, up from 63% in 2024.
This year’s survey had several positive findings. Pay satisfaction rose 23% between 2020 and 2025, overall job satisfaction increased by 9% from 2024, and the share of employees not considering leaving NMED in the next year grew by 10% over the same period. In addition, 67% of employees reported being engaged in their work – more than double the national average of 32% and the highest rate since the survey’s launch in 2020. The report notes that during the 2025 state legislative session, NMED successfully advocated for additional resources to improve compensation and fill position vacancies, which may have contributed to these improvements.
