On August 5, Maryland announced the first set of pilot projects to benefit from permitting reform under the Maryland Coordinated Permitting Review Council. The Council, established by Executive Order in December 2024, facilitates interagency coordination by bringing together representatives from 11 state agencies, including the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). Members collaborate to strengthen the state’s business climate and bolster economic competitiveness by cutting red tape for major projects.
The initial list of six expedited projects includes mixed-used and residential developments, agritourism and food production facilities, and a data center campus. To make these projects possible, MDE is streamlining processes for wastewater discharge permits, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control plans, and more, while continuing to fulfil its mission to protect and restore the environment.
