Last week, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) announced its new partnership with the University of California, Berkeley Center for Law, Energy & the Environment (CLEE) on proactive methane action with tools for emission planning and analysis. This marks the first partnership announced by the Subnational Methane Action Coalition (SMAC), which is a coalition of three U.S. states (Maryland, California, and Colorado) and international cities and regions led by CLEE and the Climate Group.
MDE and CLEE will employ a plan designed by SMAC in conjunction with an AI-enabled inventory tool using Maryland’s greenhouse gas inventory, Climate TRACE source data, and other emissions data. This will allow MDE to test and track methane emissions to help implement Maryland’s Climate Pollution Reduction Plan and other climate goals.
