The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has approved more than $40M to accelerate the inventory and replacement of drinking water lines that contain lead in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.
The funding will support the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission’s work to identify and fully replace lead service lines, safeguarding the health of more than two million residents. About 14,000 lines are expected to require replacement, with work planned to begin later this year.
Overall, Maryland has secured $105M from federal sources to assist water systems in identifying and replacing lead pipes. Read more about MDE’s efforts here.
