Last week, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) announced the availability of grant funding for recycling projects from its Recycling Market Development Program (RMDP). Eligible entities include public and private businesses, local governments, solid waste management districts, higher education institutions, and nonprofit organizations located and doing business in Indiana.
Grants are financed through the Recycling Promotion and Assistance Fund, authorized by the state legislature, and funded by 50% of the Solid Waste Management Fee, a per-ton fee on solid waste disposed of at Indiana landfills. The fee is used to support source reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting projects across the state, helping to promote alternative solid waste disposal methods.
Selected projects will increase recyclable material collection or utilization, reduce municipal solid waste shipped for final disposal, improve partnerships with communities, and/or increase public awareness of recycling opportunities through outreach and education efforts. Grants range from $50,000 to $500,000 with a 50% cash match.
