The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is hosting a set of five regional open houses to support the development of its Indiana State Materials Management Plan (MMP). The MMP initiative is funded by U.S. EPA’s Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant program and will replace IDEM’s current Solid Waste plan, which dates back to 1990.
While the Solid Waste plan focuses on traditional recycling and waste disposal, the MMP will adopt a sustainable materials management approach that encourages better access to recycling, organics management, and waste reduction. The plan will cover pre- and post-consumer recyclables, organics, tires, wood, concrete, e-waste, textiles, construction and demolition waste, and emerging waste streams.
IDEM’s open houses will feature updates on the MMP’s development, initial findings from statewide surveys and interviews, and plan components. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback that will shape the final plan, expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
