Last week when an historic flooding event hit Indiana, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Emergency Response team took calls for service from across the state, particularly in the hard-hit eastern part of Indiana. Reasons for calls included oil sheens on the White River, chemical and petroleum reports, and contamination discovered in residential yards and agricultural fields as floodwaters receded.
“IDEM’s Emergency Response staff responds to calls at all hours,” IDEM notes. “They assist private citizens who report spills and support first responders who request technical guidance. Their role is to provide oversight, coordinate with local partners, and help reduce environmental impacts during both routine incidents and large-scale events like the recent flooding.”
