Surpassing U.S. EPA guidelines on methane reduction, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CHPHE) Air Quality Control Commission has completed three rulemaking hearings to update Colorado Air Quality Control Commission Regulation 7. During its September meeting, the commission finalized these updates, tightening rules to reduce methane emissions across the state’s entire oil and gas supply chain.
The CDPHE Air Pollution Control Division estimates the revisions to Regulation 7 will cut almost 16,000 metric tons of methane annually by 2029. This reduction matches the greenhouse gas impact of taking 104,000 gasoline-powered vehicles off the road. The updates will also cut thousands of tons of volatile organic compounds each year, reducing ground-level ozone pollution.
