This week, the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) awarded more than $4M in Environmental Justice Action Grants to 15 projects in communities impacted by pollution and environmental hazards. Awardees include tribes and community-based organizations, and selected projects will aim to strengthen emergency preparedness, safeguard public health, expand participation in environmental and climate decision-making, and ensure coordinated enforcement of environmental protections.
CalEPA established the EJ Action Grants Program in 2024 with the intention of funding projects that lift the burden of pollution from those most vulnerable to its effects, as part of its overall mission to restore, protect, and enhance the environment, and to ensure public health, environmental quality, and economic vitality. Since its establishment, the program has provided over $10M in grants across two rounds.
