In late July, U.S. EPA approved Alaska’s request to implement the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle C hazardous waste management program. The authorization bid was a collaborative effort among the Office of Governor Mike Dunleavy, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Alaska Department of Law, EPA Region 10, and tribal partners.
With this authorization, Alaska becomes the 49th state to carry out its own hazardous waste program with the goal of utilizing local environmental experts and minimizing federal delays.
For more information, see EPA’s announcement and DEC’s Hazardous Waste Program webpage.
