Last week, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) announced completion of a voluntary program testing lead levels in drinking water at schools and childcare facilities around the state. ADEM collaborated with the Alabama Department of Human Resources, Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education, and Alabama State Department of Education to test over 5,000 samples from more than 1,100 schools and childcare facilities. Results of the tests were provided to each facility, and a report on all results is available here.
The program, funded by a grant from U.S. EPA and built on a public school sampling program that ran from 2017-2019, provided an opportunity for schools and childcare facilities to work with their public water systems to meet requirements of the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions and the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements.
