Earlier this month, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MO DNR) convened the newly established Missouri Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force to help evaluate and guide the state’s approach to nuclear energy development.
Created under Executive Order 26-04, the task force is charged with strengthening Missouri’s energy reliability, affordability, and economic competitiveness, while maintaining nuclear safety standards and environmental stewardship. The membership includes experts from a variety of disciplines, including scientists, lawmakers, local leaders, and utility representatives.
MO DNR Director Kurt Schaefer notes that the state anticipates a significant increase in the needs for energy in the coming years, and will require a reliable, dispatchable source. The agency notes that advanced nuclear energy reactors, unlike existing commercial nuclear reactors, are more compact and scalable in design and incorporate innovative technologies.
