Throughout the month of April, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality is hosting activities for Environmental Awareness Month (EAM). A community outreach and education initiative, EAM highlights the importance of protecting the islands’ natural resources and encourages residents, schools, businesses, and community organizations to take an active role in environmental stewardship.
A calendar of events is available to guide the public through activities that suit their interests, from lab tours and tree plantings to island cleanups and art contests. At a two-day Environmental Expo, participants have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about environmental careers, and find ways to make a difference in the community.
Originally established as Environmental Awareness Week in the early 1990s, the program later expanded into a month-long celebration to allow for greater community participation and educational outreach across the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
