On February 24, U.S. EPA announced final approval of Wyoming’s coal combustion residuals (CCR) program, allowing the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to permit CCR disposal in surface impoundments and landfills. With this approval, Wyoming becomes the fifth state in the nation to secure CCR program authority, joining Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, and North Dakota.
Wyoming’s approval covers a partial CCR permit program, as DEQ did not seek approval for certain items. For more information, see U.S. EPA’s webpage and the Federal Register notice of the final approval.
U.S. EPA has offered to work with states to help craft approvable CCR permit programs, from initial conversations to final approvals. The agency will soon be proposing decisions for at least four additional states and is working with several other states to propose decisions later this year.
