To help raise awareness, the Nevada Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Task Force held a HABs Education Day at a state recreation area on July 8. Experts from the Task Force shared information on recognizing HABs, provided safety guidelines, and highlighted the importance of using the state’s reporting tool to report a suspected HAB.
At the event, Task Force members encouraged attendees to learn to identify HABs, to check for HAB advisories before recreating in waters, to report suspected blooms, and to keep children, pets, livestock, and other animals away from potentially contaminated water.
The Nevada HAB Task Force was initiated in 2019 and formalized in 2023 with a goal of combatting HABs through advanced technologies, coordinated efforts, and community outreach. The Task Force includes the representatives from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, the Nevada Department of Human Services, the Nevada Division of State Parks, the Nevada Division of Wildlife, and the Nevada Department of Agriculture, along with federal partners and stakeholders.
