Last week, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced four flood control and prevention projects in the Southern Tier. Funded by $21M from the state’s Environmental Bond Act of 2022, these projects will enhance stormwater management and resilient infrastructure to safeguard residents from extreme weather and the high costs of rebuilding after floods. In total, the Bond Act allocates $1.1B of its $4.2B to protect communities from flood risks.
The initial four projects improve flood infrastructure in Binghamton, Elmira, Olean, and Whitney Point. DEC will rehabilitate floodwalls, install relief wells, stabilize levees, upgrade gate systems, and more. Originally built in the 1940s or early 1950s, these structures require improvements to maintain their long-term effectiveness in protecting communities from storms.
